The ZiS-42 was a half-track version of the ZiS-5 truck, built by the Stalin Plant in Moscow to carry cargo and tow artillery over the deep mud and snow of the Eastern Front. The improved ZiS-42M was developed in mid-1942 and entered production that September, and the first batch went to the Stalingrad Front in October and November 1942. It went on to serve the Red Army on almost every front, and 5,931 were built by the end of production in 1944.
