The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIII was the definitive single-stage Merlin-powered variant, incorporating a retractable tailwheel, strengthened undercarriage, and redesigned fuel system. It served primarily in the Mediterranean, CBI, and Pacific theatres, equipping both RAF and RAAF units. Wing Commander Clive Caldwell — Australia's highest-scoring ace — flew Mk.VIIIs with No. 1 Wing RAAF in the defence of Darwin. Original new tool from Otaki, 1975; OT2-24-500 is the 1980 boxing. Series No. 12.
