USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is the lead ship of the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered supercarriers, commissioned in 1975 and the first of ten vessels in the class. At over 1,000 feet in length and displacing more than 100,000 tonnes, the Nimitz-class represented a generational leap in carrier aviation capability. The Nimitz saw action in the 1980 Iranian hostage crisis rescue attempt (Operation Eagle Claw) and has deployed continuously through multiple conflicts since. Otaki first tooled this kit in 1977; this OT1-43 release is a 1980 rebox of that original tooling.
