Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins spent the early Pro Stock years fighting big-inch Hemis with Chevrolet iron, and in 1972 he stopped fighting and changed the rules instead. NHRA's new weight break let him drop a 331 cubic inch small block into the subcompact Vega, riding on a purpose-built lightweight chassis, and the little white car promptly won six of the season's national events and put drag racing on the front of Time magazine. Every Pro Stock car built since owes something to what Jenkins worked out with those Vegas, which is why Grumpy's Toy is still one of the most recognizable shapes in American drag racing.
