The Grumman F8F Bearcat was a US Navy carrier-based fighter developed late in the Second World War, designed around the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp in the smallest, lightest airframe that could carry it. It arrived too late to see combat in that conflict but went on to serve with several air forces, including French units that flew it in Indochina. Exceptionally fast-climbing and agile, the Bearcat marked the high point of piston-engine naval fighter design.
