The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was developed from the W194 racing prototypes that won the Carrera Panamericana and Le Mans in 1952. When the production car arrived in 1954, it was the fastest production car in the world. Its 3.0-litre straight-six was one of the first production engines with direct fuel injection, and it produced 215 hp for a top speed of about 260 km/h. The lightweight tubular space frame ran high along the car’s sides, so conventional doors wouldn’t fit. Mercedes hinged them at the roof instead, and the famous “Gullwing” doors became the car’s signature. About 1,400 Gullwing coupes were built between 1954 and 1957, and it’s still one of the most admired cars ever made. This Minichamps replica depicts the 1954 300 SL in classic silver.
