BMW Motorsport built the E30 M3 to homologate the 3 Series for Group A touring car racing. Its box flares, spoilers and side skirts were all there for the track. It was powered by a 2.3 litre four-cylinder with twin cams and four valves per cylinder, derived from the M10 block that also gave rise to BMW’s Formula 1 engine. That engine made 195 PS and took the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. The M3 went on to become one of the most successful touring cars ever, winning the 1987 World Touring Car Championship and titles across Europe.
