Erich Hartmann (1922–1993) was a German fighter pilot of the Second World War and is credited as the highest-scoring fighter ace in aviation history, with 352 claimed aerial victories, all on the Eastern Front flying the Bf 109. Nicknamed "Bubi" by his comrades and "the Black Devil" by Soviet opponents, he survived the war, was held in Soviet captivity for ten years, and later served in the postwar West German Luftwaffe.
