The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was built in greater numbers than any other American military aircraft of the Second World War, and its long range made it the backbone of the Fifth Air Force's bomber campaign across the Pacific. B-24J 44-40973 of the 43rd Bomb Group became one of the most famous Liberators of the war when its crew commissioned a dragon painted along the entire length of the fuselage, making it the only known WWII combat aircraft to wear full-length nose art. Pilot Joseph Pagani flew "The Dragon and His Tail" on 85 missions, many at low level, and the artwork became a classic of wartime aviation art.
