The AEC Armoured Car was developed as a private venture by the Associated Equipment Company, first demonstrated to British Army officials in 1941 where it impressed Winston Churchill sufficiently to secure a production order. The most heavily armed and armoured British armoured car of the war, the Mk.III mounted a QF 75mm gun and carried 65mm frontal armour — superior to any other British armoured car of the period. A total of 629 vehicles were built across all three marks. The Mk.III served primarily in Western Europe and the Low Countries from 1944, and a batch was also transferred to Yugoslav partisans the same year.
