The Sud Aviation SE 210 Caravelle was the first successful European short and medium range jet airliner, first flown in May 1955. Its rear mounted engines and clean wing set a layout that many later designs followed. United Airlines was the only American carrier to order the type, taking twenty aircraft into service from 1961, and the Caravelle VI-R was developed with uprated Rolls-Royce Avon engines, thrust reversers and a revised flight deck to meet United requirements.
