USS San Diego (CL-53) was an Atlanta-class light cruiser, launched at the Bethlehem Steel yard in Quincy, Massachusetts on 26 July 1941 and designed as an anti-aircraft escort bristling with 5-inch dual-purpose guns. Powered by 72,000 hp machinery for a top speed of over 32 knots, she served throughout the Pacific War, fought at the Battle of Santa Cruz, and became one of the most decorated US warships of the conflict, leading the first Allied ships into Tokyo Bay in 1945. After nearly 20 years on the Navy's list she was sold for scrap. This Matchbox release dates from 1992, when the brand was part of Revell.
