Description
MAG8172 - Magna Models 1/72 Short Belfast SC1 XR367 of 53 Squadron 1975 - WWHP113737
Preowned, Resealed, Mint inside, Box worn
Short Brothers designed the SC.5 Belfast as a strategic heavy freighter for the RAF, based on Bristol Britannia technology but with a much wider fuselage. Four Rolls-Royce Tyne turboprops powered it, and it could carry loads that no other RAF aircraft could, from Blue Streak missile sections to Chieftain tanks. Only ten were built, all flown by No. 53 Squadron at Brize Norton from 1966. Each was named after a mythical hero, and XR367 was “Hercules”. A defence review retired the whole fleet in 1976. Several were later flown commercially by HeavyLift Cargo Airlines, and the RAF even chartered them back during the Falklands War.
