The Spitfire LF Mk IXE combined the Merlin 66 low altitude engine with the E type wing, which replaced the outboard machine guns with a pair of .50 calibre Brownings alongside the two 20mm cannon. It was the definitive Merlin Spitfire and served in large numbers through the last year of the war. Czechoslovak squadrons flying with the RAF took their aircraft home in August 1945, and the type went on to equip the postwar Czechoslovak Air Force until Soviet types replaced it at the end of the decade.
