The McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II was developed jointly by the US and UK as a second-generation V/STOL strike aircraft, entering USMC service in 1985. The Night Attack variant introduced a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) pod, night-vision goggle-compatible cockpit lighting, and an updated nav/attack system, giving the aircraft a genuine around-the-clock close air support capability. The AV-8B Night Attack served with multiple USMC Marine Attack Squadrons and saw combat during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990–91.
