The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was conceived as a Zerstörer, a heavily armed twin-engine long-range escort fighter, and it swept the skies over Poland and France before meeting single-engine opposition during the Battle of Britain. The D series extended its reach with provision for large underwing drop tanks, and the D-3 added bomb racks, turning the type toward fighter-bomber and convoy escort work. D-3s served from Norway to the Mediterranean, where many operated over North Africa in desert camouflage.
