The Lavochkin La-5 transformed the underpowered LaGG-3 by mating its wooden airframe to the Shvetsov ASh-82 radial, producing one of the VVS's most effective wartime fighters. It proved a match for German fighters at the low altitudes typical of the Eastern Front, and aces including Ivan Kozhedub scored heavily in the type from Kursk onward.

This is the original 1972 Italaerei tooling in its first-issue box, made in Italy, from the era before the company shortened its name to Italeri. The mold went on to a long life in later Italeri, Revell, and Bilek boxings.
