The Junkers Ju 86 was developed in the mid 1930s as a twin-engine mail and passenger transport, notable for its Jumo 205 opposed-piston diesel engines, an unusual choice for an aircraft of the period. Lufthansa and Swissair both operated the type on European routes, and the same airframe was developed in parallel into a Luftwaffe medium bomber.
