The Heinkel He 111 was the Luftwaffe's principal medium bomber through the Battle of Britain and remained in service in secondary roles to the end of the war. The H-22 was a late conversion fitted with an underwing pylon so it could air launch the Fi 103 flying bomb, better known as the V-1, allowing attacks on Britain after the ground launch sites in France were overrun. KG 53 flew the bulk of these sorties from bases in the Netherlands and northwest Germany through the winter of 1944 and into 1945.
