The Sd.Kfz.261 was the long-range radio variant of the Sd.Kfz.221 light armoured car, fitted with a large frame aerial in place of the turret and equipped with the FuG 10 long-range radio set. Unarmed and intended purely for command and communications duties, it served with armoured reconnaissance and headquarters units throughout the war on all fronts. Its distinctive folding frame antenna made it instantly recognisable and a priority target for enemy forces aware of its role.
