The I-15 was Nikolai Polikarpov's answer to the question of how manoeuvrable a biplane fighter could be made, and the answer turned out to be very. Its distinctive gulled upper wing, faired directly into the fuselage to improve the pilot's forward view, gave the type its character and its nickname of Chaika. First flown in October 1934, 384 were built in 1934 and 1935, with more than 200 exported to Spain and China while the rest served the Red Army Air Force to the end of the decade. In the horizontal plane it could out-turn almost anything it met.
