The F6F-5 was the definitive production Hellcat — tighter cowling, integral bulletproof windscreen, strengthened tail, and the full 2,000hp R-2800 Double Wasp. It entered Pacific combat in late 1943 and went on to account for the majority of the Hellcat's remarkable 19:1 kill ratio against Japanese aircraft by war's end. Over 12,000 were built in just over two years, a production pace that itself helped swing the air war in the Pacific.
