German heavy rail transport became increasingly important during the Second World War as tanks like the Tiger I strained the limits of road movement and mechanical reliability. The Deutsche Reichsbahn’s SSyms 80 heavy-duty flatcar was specifically designed to carry oversized armored vehicles and military cargo, featuring reinforced construction and a high load capacity suitable for Germany’s heaviest tanks. Tiger I tanks were commonly transported by rail between fronts, factories, and repair depots, often fitted with narrower “transport tracks” to meet railway clearance limits. Mid-production Tiger I variants introduced a number of refinements over early models, including revised commander’s cupolas, improved air filtration systems, and updated turret details while retaining the iconic 8.8 cm KwK 36 main gun that made the Tiger feared on every front.

This is HobbyBoss kit No. 82934, a 1/72 scale combination kit featuring the German Schwere Plattformwagen Typ SSyms 80 heavy railway flatcar together with a Pz.Kpfw. VI Ausf. E Tiger I Mid Production tank. The kit combines an all-new tooled railcar with a compact Tiger I model derived from earlier Trumpeter/HobbyBoss tooling, making it an ideal centerpiece for railway or armored logistics dioramas. The finished model measures approximately 400 mm in length and includes molded railbed display sections.
