The Karl-Gerat 60cm siege mortars needed a purpose-built vehicle to move and load their two tonne shells, so in May 1941 a small number of Pz.Kpfw. IV chassis were taken from the production line and converted into Munitionsschlepper. The turret was replaced by a superstructure holding four rounds and a crane for lifting them into the mortar's breech. Only thirteen were completed, on Ausf. D, E, and F hulls, with two assigned to each operational Karl and one to the experimental seventh vehicle.
