Porsche's Type 180 took the earlier VK 45.02 (P) layout and reworked the hull to carry the 8.8 cm KwK 43 L/71. Two arrangements were proposed, turret forward as the Vorne or turret rearward as the Hintern, and only the front turret version went ahead with three prototypes underway by February 1943. The Krupp designed P2-Turm turret intended for these vehicles was already in production and ended up on the first fifty King Tigers, where its curved mantlet lip proved a shot trap and was replaced by the Henschel turret on later production.
