However, after cutting a tire in Turn 3 due to debris, he was forced to slow dramatically, opening the door for Derrike Cope in the #10 Purolator Chevrolet Lumina. Cope, driving a modestly funded single-car team for owner Bob Whitcomb, inherited the lead and secured one of the most shocking victories in NASCAR history. The win became Cope’s defining career moment and one of the most memorable upsets ever seen at Daytona.
