French dragoons were distinctive in their brass Greco-styled helmets and green uniforms, forming the workhorse element of Napoleon's cavalry and filling a wide range of battlefield roles. As the wars progressed and large horses became scarce for the cuirassiers, dragoons were increasingly pressed into the heavy cavalry role. When mounts ran short entirely, some dragoon regiments served dismounted as foot units.
