The Mohawk was Grumman's answer to the US Army's need for a battlefield observation aircraft that could operate from short unimproved strips and survive small arms fire. Twin Lycoming T53 turboprops, a triple tail and a bulged cockpit with excellent downward visibility gave it the stall behaviour and the view the mission demanded, and the crew sat on Martin-Baker seats behind armoured glass. The OV-1A was the photographic reconnaissance version, and Mohawks flew intensively in Vietnam before later variants carried side looking radar and infrared sensors into the 1990s.
