The BAC Lightning was Britain's only domestically developed supersonic fighter, a striking Mach 2 interceptor with its two Rolls-Royce Avon engines mounted one above the other in a stacked arrangement. The F Mk.6 was the definitive operational variant, featuring a revised cambered wing, enlarged ventral fuel tank, and provision for over-wing ferry tanks to extend its notoriously short range. It served the RAF as a frontline interceptor until 1988, prized for its phenomenal rate of climb.
