The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was the US Navy’s premier carrier-based fleet defence fighter from 1974 until 2006. Its variable-sweep wings and AWG-9 radar let it track up to 24 targets and engage six at once with long-range AIM-54 Phoenix missiles. In 1991 USS Independence became the Navy’s forward-deployed carrier at Yokosuka, Japan. Its Carrier Air Wing 5 included two Tomcat squadrons, VF-21 “Freelancers” and VF-154 “Black Knights,” which flew from the ship through most of the 1990s. Hasegawa released this special edition in 1992 with markings for the CAG and squadron commanders’ aircraft.
