The Martlet was the Fleet Air Arm's name for the Grumman Wildcat, supplied to Britain from 1940 and the first American-built fighter to score a victory in British service. The Mk.II introduced folding wings and six .50 calibre guns, which made it well suited to the cramped lifts and hangars of escort carriers. Aircraft of 802 Squadron flying from HMS Audacity used the type against Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condors over the Atlantic convoy routes in 1941.
