The Mitsubishi G4M was the Imperial Japanese Navy's land-based attack bomber, built to meet demanding range requirements by filling its wings with unprotected fuel tanks, a compromise that gave it exceptional reach and a reputation for burning readily under fire. G4Ms sank the Repulse and Prince of Wales in December 1941 and ranged far out to sea across the Pacific. The Model 22 introduced Kasei 21 engines, a redesigned wing with greater fuel capacity, a larger tail and heavier 20mm armament, entering production in 1943.
