The Yugumo class were among the most capable destroyers in the Imperial Japanese Navy, a development of the preceding Kagero class with improvements to habitability and anti-aircraft armament. Yugumo herself was completed in December 1941 at Maizuru and saw action throughout the Pacific War, participating in numerous operations in the Solomon Islands before being lost in the Battle of Vella Lavella in October 1943. Armed with three triple 12.7cm gun mounts and two quad 61cm torpedo tube banks, the class represented the peak of pre-war Japanese destroyer design.
