The Lockheed F-104C was the USAF Tactical Air Command variant of the Starfighter, optimised for ground attack with provision for a centreline nuclear weapon and a refuelling probe. It served primarily with the 479th Tactical Fighter Wing at George AFB, California, and saw combat in the Vietnam War with the 479th TFW deploying to Udorn RTAFB in 1965. The F-104's exceptional speed and climb rate came at the cost of range and manoeuvrability, and it was withdrawn from USAF service by the early 1970s.

Kit 104 is the 1976 Minicraft Hasegawa North American rebox of Hasegawa's 1/32 F-104C tooling (originally S17), itself derived from the earlier F-104J/G tool. One of the earliest and longest-lived 1/32 Starfighter kits.
