Designed from the outset as a land-based interceptor rather than a carrier fighter, the Mitsubishi J2M Raiden (Allied reporting name "Jack") prioritised climb rate and high-altitude performance over the manoeuvrability that defined the Zero. Development was protracted due to engine cooling problems with the Mitsubishi Kasei radial, but the type eventually entered service in 1943 and proved effective against high-altitude B-29 raids over the Japanese home islands. The J2M5 Type 33 was a higher-altitude variant fitted with the supercharged Kasei 26a engine, produced in limited numbers toward the end of the war.
