Lockheed designed the F-104 Starfighter as a supersonic interceptor, pairing a small, light airframe with a powerful J79 engine to reach Mach 2. It was one of the fastest fighters of its day. Japan chose the F-104J as its main interceptor, and Mitsubishi built most of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's aircraft under licence. The type entered JASDF service in the early 1960s and served for more than two decades, when it was nicknamed "Eiko" (Glory). JASDF squadrons decorated their Starfighters with colourful unit tail markings and special anniversary schemes.
