The Yokosuka P1Y Ginga ("Milky Way") was one of Japan's most capable twin-engine bombers of the Pacific War, and the P1Y1-S was a dedicated night fighter conversion developed to counter B-29 raids over the Japanese home islands. The conversion replaced the bomb-aimer's position with upward-firing oblique cannon in the Schräge Musik configuration, and aircraft were finished in overall black for nocturnal operations. Despite its potential, the type was hampered by chronic engine reliability problems and insufficient pilot training in the war's final months.
