The F-4G was the US Air Force's dedicated defence suppression Phantom, converted from F-4E airframes with the nose cannon removed and replaced by the APR-38 radar homing and warning system. Its job was to fly ahead of the strike package, find enemy surface to air missile radars, and destroy them with anti-radiation missiles before they could engage. The type flew Wild Weasel missions from Spangdahlem and George Air Force Base and saw heavy use over Iraq in 1991.
