The F-5 was Northrop's answer to a simple question: what if you built a capable supersonic fighter that smaller air forces could actually afford to operate? The result was one of the most widely exported Western jets of the Cold War era — compact, twin-engined, and nimble, supplied to dozens of nations under military aid programmes from Norway to South Vietnam to Iran. It went on to father the F-5E Tiger II and, indirectly, influence a long line of lightweight fighter designs.
