The Avro Shackleton was developed from the Lincoln and Lancaster bombers and first flew in 1949, giving the RAF a long-range maritime patrol aircraft for hunting submarines over the North Atlantic. The definitive MR.3 introduced a tricycle undercarriage, wingtip fuel tanks and a redesigned cockpit, and it served with RAF Coastal Command and with No. 35 Squadron of the South African Air Force, which flew the type for nearly three decades. Frog's 1/72 kit from the 1970s remains a nostalgic classic, with markings for both operators.
