By 1943 the Zerstörer units were being thrown against American heavy bomber formations, and the Me 410's roomy nose bomb bay made it a natural platform for ever heavier guns. The B-1/U2 carried a WB 151 gun pack of two MG 151/20 in place of the bomb load, and the R4 field conversion added a ventral pod with two more, giving a total of two 13 mm MG 131 and six 20 mm cannon. The firepower was devastating against a B-17, but the aircraft was hopeless once escorting Mustangs arrived.
