The MiG-3 was the Soviet Union's primary high-altitude interceptor in the early stages of the Eastern Front, entering service in 1941. Fast above 20,000 feet but outclassed at the lower altitudes where most combat actually took place, it was quickly overshadowed by the Yak and LaGG series. The z.6/12 designation refers to the armament configuration of one 12.7mm and two 7.62mm cowling-mounted guns.
