The Raupenschlepper Ost was developed to cope with the Eastern Front's notorious road conditions, where mud and snow defeated conventional wheeled transport. Fully tracked and based on the Steyr 1500A, it entered service in 1942 and proved highly capable. The RSO/03 was a simplified late-production variant with a basic metal cab and Deutz diesel engine. Paired with the 5cm PaK 38, it served as a mobile anti-tank platform on both fronts in 1943–44.
