The Sturmhaubitze 42 was born of a simple problem: as StuG III assault guns were increasingly diverted to anti-tank work, the infantry lost the close support fire they had been built to provide. The answer was to fit a modified 10.5cm leFH 18 howitzer, complete with muzzle brake, into the StuG III hull. Alkett built 1,212 of them between October 1942 and 1945, and vehicles produced from September 1943 onward carried the distinctive waffle pattern Zimmerit that gives this boxing its name.
