The Ausf.F2 was the Panzer IV's transformation from short-barrelled infantry support tank into a proper tank killer. Faced with the T-34 and KV-1 in Russia, the Germans replaced the stubby 7.5cm KwK 37 L/24 with the long L/43, a gun that could finally fight Soviet armour on even terms. Production ran from March 1942, and after only a few months the designation was folded into the Ausf.G, which is why these early vehicles are often called F2(G). The type first proved itself on the Eastern Front and in North Africa, where British crews nicknamed it the Panzer IV Special.
