The Sturmgeschütz III began as infantry support artillery on a Panzer III chassis and ended the war as Germany's most-produced armoured vehicle. The Ausf.G, introduced late in 1942, was the definitive version: a widened superstructure, a commander's cupola, and the long 7.5cm StuK 40 that turned an assault gun into an effective tank killer. Early production vehicles carried bolted-on 30mm appliqué armour on the nose and a folding shield for the loader's machine gun. Cheap, low and hard to spot, StuGs accounted for more Allied tanks than any German turreted design.
