The Tiger II paired the long 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 with sloped armour up to 185mm thick at the glacis, making it effectively immune to Allied tank guns from the front and able to kill almost anything at ranges beyond a mile. The Henschel turret replaced the earlier Porsche design with a simpler shape that removed the shot trap and eased production. Only around 490 were built, and the tank's weight and appetite for fuel meant more were lost to breakdowns and abandonment than to enemy fire. Zimmerit anti-magnetic paste was applied to the hull and turret until it was discontinued in September 1944.
