The Pz.Kpfw.38(t) began life as the Czech LT vz.38, a light tank ordered but never delivered before Germany occupied Czechoslovakia in 1939. Production continued under German control at the BMM works in Prague, and the type proved reliable and mechanically sound enough to serve through the invasions of Poland, France and the Soviet Union. The Ausf.G was the final gun tank version, with frontal armour increased to 50mm and greater use of welded rather than riveted construction. Only 321 were built between October 1941 and June 1942 before the line switched entirely to self-propelled anti-tank gun hulls.
