The Pz.Kpfw.I Ausf.A was the first production model of Germany's first mass-produced tank, built from July 1934 as a training vehicle for the new panzer arm and pressed into front line service when war came. Armed with only twin 7.92mm MG13 machine guns and protected by 13mm of armour, it was hopelessly outclassed as a fighting tank, yet it saw combat in Spain, Poland, Norway, France and North Africa. The Ausf.A is recognisable by its air-cooled Krupp M305 engine and the smaller, forward-mounted rear idler that sits clear of the ground.
