The Sd.Kfz.234 series was Germany's most capable wheeled armoured car of the war, an eight-wheeled monocoque hull with steering at both ends and an air-cooled Tatra diesel chosen with desert service in mind. The 234/3 mounted a short 7.5cm K51 L/24 gun in an open-topped fighting compartment, giving reconnaissance units their own fire support against soft targets and strongpoints. Fewer than ninety were built in 1944 before production shifted to the long-barrelled 234/4.
